She’s in space

30 × 40in. acrylic on canvas

One of my favorite art movements in the 20th century is Pop Art. The movement emerged in the mid 1950s to revolt against the traditional approaches to fine art by using pop culture and mass-produced objects as their subjects. Some of its more recognizable characteristics are images or icons from popular media, such as the Coca-Cola can and Campbell’s soup.

I noticed that amongst the classic images recycled through many popular Pop Art pieces, there is very little representation. Many of the female faces used in Pop Art belong to white blonde women. There is no variation, even today.

This painting is a part of my next collection, which is a quest to create some diversity in the female figures that are often depicted in Pop Art. In addition, I want to portray strong women in predominantly male-dominated fields. So, this is the first piece in my new collection. Soon-to-be-named, she is a female Indian astronaut acrylic painting.
